Pre/Post Food Waste
Our project focuses on an alternative use for pre-consumed food that is put to waste in the Akahi Dining Hall. Our research shows that there are places such as Aloha Harvest that will accept pre-consumed food deliveries to contribute to feeding the homeless. Our plan is to meet with Akahi faculty and staff to gather statistics about the pre-consumed food waste and to figure out a way that we can find an alternative use for the waste.
Pre-consumed Waste
The food that is prepared but not eaten. Different places do different things with the remaining food. Sometimes there are many pans of waste. |
Post-consumed Food
The Food that is put to waste after it is eaten. This is usually the waste that the students create from the food that they donʻt eat. |
The Future is Near Between one quarter and one half of the more than 590 billion pounds of food produced each year in the United States is squandered during the farm-to-table supply chain. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2010 discarded food represented the single largest component of municipal solid waste reaching landfills and incinerators. Food waste is particularly egregious at a time when hunger is a growing problem and an increasing human rights issue. |
